Sumatran Elephant in Leuser Ecosystem (Aceh Province)

Type in the TNGL elephant is a sub-species of the Asian elephant, Elephas maximus is sumatranus. Originally cruising lines covering almost the whole of Sumatra, but the last few decades cruising lane narrowing in the region of discontinuous forest that could support a population scattered. In TNGL, no one else cruising lane is adequately protected.

Tigers found in coastal areas up to an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level, in both the secondary and primary forests. They prefer forest borders where many found their feed animals such as wild boar. Tiger is the species most threatened by illegal hunting by using poison. The hunt will be repeated even decrease population population deep inside the national park.

Sumatran rhinos are well adapted to life in the dense mountain forests. Historical records state that the existence of the Sumatran rhino found in almost all remote areas in Sumatra and TNGL a place with good documentation (Van Strien in Jatna et al., 1996). Explained that in the past, the Sumatran rhino can be found in almost all parts of the national park, in the valleys and in the mountains, along the west coast and in the lower mainland Langkat and Deli.

TNGL and surrounding areas are referred to as the Leuser Ecosystem Area (KEL) is the habitat of the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), gibbon (Hylobates syndactylus syndactylus), gibbon (Hylobates lar), Kedih (Presbytis thomasi). Currently the Center TNGL management focuses on four flagship species.

Ditinjau dari segi geografi satwa, Pulau Sumatera digolongkan ke dalam Sub Regional Malaysia. Sedangkan di Pulau Sumatera dapat ditetapkan dua garis batas fauna, yaitu Pegunungan Bukit Barisan (bagian Barat dan Timur) dan Padang Sidempuan (bagian Utara dan Selatan).

Vegetasi di kawasan TNGL termasuk flora Sumatera dan erat hubungannya dengan flora di Semenanjung Malaysia, Pulau Kalimantan, Pulau Jawa dan bahkan Philipina. Formasi vegetasi alami di TNGL ditetapkan berdasarkan 5 kriteria, yaitu bioklimat (zona klimatik ketinggian dengan berbagai formasi floristiknya).

There are eight potential sites for the development of ecotourism in the region TNGL. These sites (Figure 7) is Kruengkila, Kedah, Marpunge, Lawe Gurah, Tangkahan, Overseas beehive, Bangko Sea Lake, and Bukit Lawang.

Terdapat 8 lokasi potensial untuk pengembangan ekowisata di kawasan TNGL. Lokasi-lokasi tersebut (Gambar 7) adalah Kruengkila, Kedah, Marpunge, Lawe Gurah, Tangkahan, Rantau Sialang, Danau Laut Bangko, dan Bukit Lawang. Selain ke-8 lokasi tersebut, masih didapati 4 lokasi sebagai Obyek dan Daya Tarik Wisata Alam (ODTWA) yang juga memiliki potensi pengembangan, yaitu:

1. Nilai Eksistensi

Taman Nasional Gunung Leuser menyandang 2 status yang berskala global yaitu sebagai Cagar Biosfer pada tahun 1981 dan sebagai Warisan Dunia pada tahun 2004. Kedua status tersebut ditetapkan oleh UNESCO dan World Heritage Committee atas usulan Pemerintah Indonesia setelah melalui rangkaian proses seleksi yang ketat. Disamping itu
