Tigers found in coastal areas up to an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level, in both the secondary and primary forests. They prefer forest borders where many found their feed animals such as wild boar. Tiger is the species most threatened by illegal hunting by using poison. The hunt will be repeated even decrease population population deep inside the national park.

According to Griffiths (1999), the population of tigers in Gunung Leuser National Park in 1992 is estimated at 100 individuals. This number is thought to comprise half of the population 6 years earlier. Predators like the tiger is a component of the lowland rain forest ecosystem in TNGL. Role as predators against pests boar, help the farmers who live around the park, from crop failure due to boar attacks. Tiger will also help maintain the balance of the wild boar population at a stable level. Losses due to pests boar magnitude equivalent to 30 goats per year, as happened in the village of Jambo Dalim, south of the TNGL.
