TNGL and surrounding areas are referred to as the Leuser Ecosystem Area (KEL) is the habitat of the Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus), Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii), gibbon (Hylobates syndactylus syndactylus), gibbon (Hylobates lar), Kedih (Presbytis thomasi). Currently the Center TNGL management focuses on four flagship species.

TNGL is the habitat of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates. This area is also a habitat for 380 species of birds to the list and 350 of them are sedentary species. Predicted that 36 of the 50 endemic bird species in Sundaland, can be found in the TNGL. Of the 129 species of mammals large and small throughout Sumatra, 65% of whom are in this park.
